The Society was originally formed as a ladies choir in 1912 and became the Gravesend Co-operative Choir in 1930 staging many concert versions of operas.  Supported by the Co-operative Society, the choir rehearsed in a house on the Grove and performed shows in the former Co-op Hall on Harmer Street.

The choir aimed to perform a Gilbert and Sullivan opera annually, although in later years, when the group became Gravesend Operatic Society (GOS), the repertoire broadened considerably into English and American musicals.

Now known as Gravesend Entertainment and Musical Society, GEMS still perform many regular concerts throughout the year around the District in support of various charities and every autumn perform a staged musical or musical production.
