Our History

A Century of Music and Theatre

Founded in 1912, Gravesend Entertainment & Musical Society (GEMS) began life as a women’s choir, bringing choral music to the local community. In an era when live performance was a central part of social life, the choir quickly became a valued cultural presence in Gravesend.

During the 1930s, the society evolved into the Gravesend Co-operative Choir, performing operatic works with the support of the local Co-operative movement. These productions laid the foundations for a growing ambition — blending musical excellence with theatrical storytelling.

As audiences’ tastes broadened, so too did the Society’s repertoire. Becoming the Gravesend Operatic Society, the group expanded into English and American musical theatre, Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, and increasingly ambitious staged productions. Each decade brought new styles, new performers, and new creative challenges — all embraced with enthusiasm.

Today, as Gravesend Entertainment & Musical Society, GEMS proudly carries forward this legacy. We combine over a century of tradition with a modern, welcoming approach to community theatre, ensuring that our history remains alive on stage.

Music at the Heart of the Community

For more than 100 years, GEMS has been woven into the cultural fabric of Gravesend. Beyond performances, the Society represents friendship, creativity, and shared purpose.

Throughout its history, GEMS has:

• Presented annual full-scale musical productions
• Maintained an active performing choir
• Supported local charities and community events
• Provided opportunities for performers, musicians, and backstage volunteers

From classic operettas such as The Mikado and The Gondoliers, to beloved musicals including My Fair Lady, Carousel, and Into the Woods, our repertoire reflects changing musical styles while honouring theatrical tradition.

Every production is the result of months of collaboration — performers, musicians, designers, and technical teams working together to create memorable live theatre experiences.

The Spirit Behind the Curtain

While audiences see the finished performance, the true magic of GEMS lies in the teamwork behind the scenes. Costumes are stitched, sets are built, lighting is designed, and rehearsals bring cast and crew together in a shared creative journey.

Many lifelong friendships have formed through this process. Generations of members have passed on skills, traditions, and stories, making the Society not just a theatre group, but a community.

Preserving Our Legacy

With more than a century of productions, GEMS holds a rich archive of performances that capture the evolution of local theatre. Photographs, programmes, and memories tell the story of changing styles, creative ambition, and enduring passion.

Our commitment to preserving this heritage ensures that future members can celebrate the achievements of those who came before them.

Looking Forward

With a strong foundation built on dedication, friendship, and musical excellence, GEMS continues to bring people together through live performance in Gravesend and North West Kent.

We remain committed to nurturing new talent, embracing fresh ideas, and keeping the joy of theatre alive for future generations.

We are proud of our past — and excited for the future.
